About

Steven Wyn Owen is a Welsh Director of Photography with over 15 years of experience in the film and television industry. Featured in Digital Filmmaker Magazine, Steven’s approach reflects his dedication to visual storytelling and technical excellence. Recognised for his entrepreneurial spirit, he won the Future Entrepreneur of the Year award with his start up company Cardinal Films Ltd, at the 2012 Wales Quality Awards in Cardiff.

His journey began with Echoes of Summer Sin, a micro-budget feature film that Steven wrote and directed in the summer after finishing college and before starting his university degree. This formative experience led to a unique opportunity with Skillset Screen Academy Wales and the National Council for Drama Training—where Steven directed and shot a behind-the-scenes documentary following young drama students during a series of acting workshops, culminating in a filmed Q&A session with Sir John Hurt.

From there, Steven immersed himself in independent productions across the UK, Malta, France, and Spain before gaining his first foothold in the industry as a Camera Trainee. He quickly progressed to Clapper Loader on high-end drama, with early credits including Doctor Who, Casualty, Da Vinci’s Demons, The Bastard Executioner, and Stella— including award-winning and critically acclaimed British productions. These formative years built the foundation of his technical precision, set etiquette, and visual discipline.

Steven then established himself as a respected Focus Puller (1st AC), contributing towards high-profile dramas such as The Responder (BBC), Sherwood (BBC), Traces (Alibi), and Everything I Know About Love (BBC) to name just a few . His commercial work includes campaigns for Pepsi, JD Sports, MG Motors, and Heineken, and he has supported major sports broadcasts for Sky Sports, BBC, and Amazon Prime, with experience assisting Steadicam operators on fast-paced live events.

As a Camera Operator and 2nd Unit Director of Photography, Steven has contributed to acclaimed scripted series including G’WED (ITV), 4 O’Clock club (BBC), Phoenix Rise (BBC) and Lagging (BBC), while consistently shooting his own short films and music videos—many of which have received international recognition.

His cinematography has been awarded at numerous festivals, including Best Cinematography for both short films and music videos. As a director, he was honoured with the Welsh Dragon Award at the International Film Festival of Wales for Best Low Budget Welsh Short. His contributions as a DOP have helped earn several projects broader festival and award recognition.

In 2024, Steven completed principal photography on his first feature as Director of Photography and was commissioned by LA Productions to lens his first broadcast drama—marking a significant evolution in his cinematography career.

Steven is also a Cinematic Brand Ambassador for Formatt Hitech, where he works closely with the R&D team to develop diffusion filters tailored to the demands of high-resolution digital cinematography. His insights have shaped products now used by DOPs worldwide.

Rooted in story, elevated by craft, and driven by a quiet determination to keep evolving, Steven brings clarity, creativity, and care to every frame.
